Balcony Solar: Expanding Access to Renewable Energy

Balcony solar, sometimes referred to as plug-in solar, is an emerging technology designed to help households generate renewable electricity where traditional rooftop solar installations may not be practical.

Typically installed on balconies, terraces, external walls or small outdoor spaces, these systems provide an opportunity for flat residents, leaseholders and renters to benefit from solar energy.

In August 2026, the UK Government confirmed that compliant plug-in solar systems became legal for use across Great Britain, enabling households to install approved systems of up to 800W capacity. Government guidance suggests that these systems could provide up to 20% of an average home's electricity usage and potentially save households up to £110 per year on energy bills.

While balcony solar offers an exciting opportunity to widen access to renewable energy, homeowners, tenants and leaseholders should ensure that any system complies with current regulations and installation requirements.

Depending on the property type, permission may be required from landlords, freeholders or managing agents, and users should follow all manufacturer instructions and network notification requirements.

As the technology develops, balcony solar could play an important role in helping more households reduce energy costs, lower carbon emissions and participate in the UK's transition to cleaner, locally generated energy.
